Looking for a delicious way to spruce up your plain old porridge? Try this comforting fig & flax oats recipe! Warm and sweet, a bowl of this Vata friendly breakfast makes getting out of bed that little bit easier on colder mornings!
I came up with this combination one morning when I had some fresh figs I wanted to put to good use and was experimenting with different recipes. I rarely add fruit to my oats (see more on why below!) but was pleasantly surprised at how good this combo tasted!
The sweet and juicy fresh figs combined with fibre rich flax seeds are a perfect combination to keep everything ‘moving smoothly’ – particularly for Vata types that are more prone to constipation. A tsp of chia seeds is also a great addition to support regular digestion.
While fresh figs works best for this recipe, you can substitute with dried figs if that’s all you can get your hands on. It’s a good idea, however, to rehydrate them in warm water first, or you can cook them up with the oats so they are nice and soft.
Ayurveda Perspective on Fig & Flax Oats
Grains, like oats, tend to have heavy, nourishing and sweet qualities (gunas). In Ayurveda, these are the exact qualities we need to balance Vata dosha, particularly in fall. This is a great breakfast option to try for those experiencing constipation or dry, rough, Vata type stools.
Technically in Ayurveda fruit should be eaten alone – fruits and grains are considered an ‘incompatible food combination‘ meaning they don’t digest well together. You can still enjoy this combo, but eat in moderation if you are experiencing indigestion.
Here’s What You Need
- Oats
- Almond milk
- Vanilla protein
- Flax seeds
- Figs
