Ever wondered how to make almond milk? Look no further! This quick & easy recipe will show you exactly how to do it in just a few simple steps. I love the convenience of store bought almond milk, but it can be pricey and all those empty boxes start adding up when you use it everyday. While I still buy some in the shop, I love making every other batch myself. Not only is it far more cost effective, it tastes so fresh and really only takes a few minutes (besides the soaking time of course!).
Making your own almond milk also gives you a chance to have it just how you like it, and experiment with different flavours. I personally like a tiny bit of maple and a pinch of mineral salt, but the options are really endless. As someone who does not tolerate dairy very well but loves milk, this is my go-to for smoothies, cereals, hot chocolates, teas and really any other time you would use ordinary milk! A perfect dairy free alternative.
Ayurveda Perspective on Homemade Almond Milk
Almonds are highly regarded in Ayurveda. They have a sweet and warming quality that soothes and nourishes the tissues of the body while increasing vitality. They are considered to be a Sattvic food, meaning they are pure, build strength and bring clarity of mind. The oil of almonds is very valuable for use during self massage (abhyanga), especially for Vata types.
Almonds, like most nuts, can be very difficult for some people to digest. Soaking them overnight and removing the skin by gently peeling before eating can help (this is also said to increase the Sattvic quality of the nuts).

- nutmilk bag or muslin cloth
Ingredients
- 1 cup almonds
- 4 cups fresh water
- 1 tsp maple syrup (sweeten to taste - optional)
Instructions
- Soak the almonds in water overnight
- The following day, drain, rinse thoroughly and discard water used for soaking
- Blend the rinsed almonds with fresh water for 1-2 mins

Notes
- Drink almond milk alone or add it to smoothies, porridge or tea
- The leftover almond meal can be incorporated into a bowl of porridge or energy balls, meaning there is no waste
- Both milk and meal can be stored in the fridge for about 3 days
- Get creative with what you add for a little flavour - try saffron, cardamom, cinnamon and more!
- Or keep it plain and simple!
- Homemade almond milk can 'separate' in the fridge, so shake before serving
