This gorgeous, velvety, purple smoothie has a secret ingredient hiding inside – BEETS! I know, I know. Beets aren’t the most typical addition to your morning smoothie. I admit, they are a very love ’em or hate ’em food. But I promise this recipe will convert even the most skeptical!
This Berry & Beet Iron Boosting Smoothie is a powerhouse of nutrients. As the name suggests, it’s a wonderful source of plant based (non-heme) iron and a great addition to your postpartum diet.
Not only that, but it genuinely tastes sooooo good! It’s full of naturally sweet ingredients that are both cooling and soothing – perfect for summer! Now, let’s take a look and I’ll show you what’s inside.
Blueberries: While blueberries aren’t necessarily high in iron themselves, they are packed with Vitamin C which is essential for the absorption of iron.
Beets: Beets really are the star of the show in this smoothie! Rich in both iron and Vitamin C, beets are considered ‘blood building’ in Ayurveda, often used to support healthy iron levels.
Spirulina: A blue-green algae, spirulina is often touted as a ‘superfood’ for it’s nutritional value, including iron. It’s often recommended for vegetarians and vegans as it’s one of the best plant sources of iron.
Bee Pollen: An optional extra to top your smoothie! Some studies show it may support the uptake of iron and regeneration of haemoglobin too.
While it’s important to include iron rich foods in your diet, it’s unlikely to be enough if you suffer from anaemia. You may require iron supplements, or in very serious cases a blood or iron transfusion, so always check with your doctor if you are concerned about your iron levels.
Ayurveda Perspective on Berry & Beet Iron Boosting Smoothie
Beets are a very important ingredient in Ayurveda and are often used as part of a seasonal cleanse. As well as their cleansing properties, beets are considered nourishing for their ability to ‘build the blood.’ In addition, they are also high in fibre, supporting strong digestion and ensuring regular elimination.
This recipe is particularly beneficial to Pitta types but may be too sweet and cool for Kaphas. However, Kapha types do better with raw beets. Beets and blueberries are the perfect Pitta pacifying combo to soothe and cool excess heat and inflammation.
