If you’re a tired mom, this post is for you!
Being a mom is no easy task 🤪 It requires a certain level of mental and physical energy to be able to navigate all the ups and downs of motherhood.
Taking care of your children is usually the easiest part – and of course, most heartwarming and fulfilling. However, it’s the constant juggle of everything else – work, family, finances, managing a house, career goals and taking care of ourselves – that can leave you feeling tired and drained.
As a mom, it’s important to have enough energy not only to keep up with your daily responsibilities, but to feel good as your own person and work towards your own goals outside of motherhood.
Ayurveda offers lots of easy tips and tricks to help increase your energy levels naturally and start feeling like a happier and healthier mom.
1. Start Your Day with Hot Water
I love this tip, because it’s SO EASY literally anyone can do it. Just boil some water and away you go! Just because this tip is simple, doesn’t mean it isn’t powerful… In Ayurveda, your digestive system is key for overall health and wellbeing. When it’s not working right, nothing else can.
Think about it like this – if you’re digestive system can’t extract the nutrients from your food – how will you ever have enough energy to get through the day?
Starting your day with plain, hot water (leave any tea or coffee until after breakfast) is a simple, free way to start supporting your digestive fire (agni) right away.
2. Prioritise Sleep Above All Else
This one is obvious – but much (much) easier said than done as a mom. There will be times that you simply can’t get the sleep you need during motherhood, and sleep deprivation is a torturous experience. Instead of focusing on perfect sleep, ask yourself, “what supports and systems can I have in place to get more sleep?”
Maybe its getting more help overnight from your partner, asking someone to take your baby for a walk for an hour so you can nap, and taking every opportunity you can to rest (even if you’re not fully asleep). Maximise the sleep you can get, and then once your little one is sleeping longer, you can get your 7-8 hours (or more!) each night.
Don’t wake up early for a morning routine – sleep when you can and try an Ayurvedic evening routine for moms instead!
3. Follow an Ayurvedic Diet
A balanced diet is important for general wellbeing, and can also help boost energy levels. In Ayurveda, it’s recommended to eat light, fresh and easily digestible meals, and avoid heavy and processed foods. Not sure where to start? 4. Move Your Body
We all know the benefits of regular exercise. But when you are completely exhausted, it feels impossible to know where to start! Light exercise like yoga, walking, swimming or gentle weight lifting are a great options if you’re a tired mom -especially if you can go do any of these with a friend! These forms of exercise are also generally suited to all doshas. Something is better than nothing, so even if you can only do 15 minutes, start there!
5. Practice Stress Management
The stress of motherhood can’t be avoided at times, but chronic stress can majorly effect your energy levels. Ayurveda recommends many techniques like meditation, deep breathing, and yoga, which can help reduce stress and increase energy levels. 6. Limit Caffeine and Sugar
Caffeine and sugar may give you the temporary energy boost you desperately crave, but they can also lead to a crash and ultimately leave you feeling worse than before. It may not always be possible to completely eliminate them, but try and gradually limit your intake. If you’re really craving coffee but don’t want the energy spike and crash, try my Rise & Shine Coffee Smoothie !
7. Discover Your Dosha
Your ‘dosha’ is another way of saying your Ayurvedic Body Type. When you know your dosha, you can start living in alignment with what’s best for YOU. You can tailor your diet choices and lifestyle practices to your unique needs. If you don’t know what your dosha is, get started with my free quiz.
8. Ask For Help & Simplify
There is no reward at the end of motherhood for doing it all yourself! Find what areas of life you can delegate, ask for help with, or simply let go of completely. It can feel a little uncomfortable to start, but simplifying your life in this way will be the best thing you ever do!
9. Take Time Out for Your Relationships
Make sure to have some regular time scheduled into your calendar to go meet a friend or do something with your partner without the kids. It might not be as often as you’d like it to be right now, but make it a top priority. Physically schedule like you would an appointment into your calendar! Then, each month try and add more and more time for you to spend building your relationships.
Embrace a Slower Pace of Life
No one tip or suggestion is going to radically change your energy levels. It takes time, consistency and a dedication to prioritise your own needs. Don’t fall into the trap of using any extra energy to ‘do-do-do’. Each day, try and adopt a slower pace of living – focus on what really matters to you, and let the rest go!
Remember to always work with where you are currently at in your journey through motherhood. If you have a newborn, you simply won’t have the capabilities to do the same each day as someone with a 6 year old. So give yourself grace, accept where you are and try just implement even one practice per day to support yourself.
